There Are So Many Choices For Day Care And Preschool. How Do I Choose?

By Dr. April Davall

Parents spend a lot of time worrying about whether their children are in the right day care and preschool. They look around everywhere trying to decide on the best place on their budget. This can be a very difficult process because you are putting a lot of trust into the caretakers. Leaving your child is hard enough when you know the caretaker intimately.

Kids with Special Needs

If your child has special needs than it can bring added stress in looking for the best day care and preschool. There are a lot of accredited day cares and preschool that have people specializing in working with children with special needs. Searching for the right place will take time and energy, but it will be worth it. Think of it as shopping. Most people wouldn’t buy something without first seeing the item. In the same way, you need to visit each center and meet the people working there. Trust your gut feeling. If you feel a little uneasy about a place, scratch it off the list. You need to feel 100 percent comfortable with the day care and preschool.

When you visit each place, request to see credentials for the person who works with children with special needs. You can even request to speak with the director or principal of the day care and preschool, if your child will need certain accommodations. This will also give you a chance to ask any questions about the goals of the program.

Pushing to be the Best

If you are interested in a day care and preschool that has a long waiting list, because that must mean it is good, think again. Although the program costs more and focuses on working with the wealthy, this may not be a good thing for your child. You will receive care from professionals and have your child pushed to succeed. The problem is that some children need less pushing and more coddling for a healthy development. Sometimes too much pressure on the child to advance, can be damaging to their self-esteem and end up holding them back rather than moving forward.

So it is important that you know your child and what would be best for your child. Does he/she need a day care and preschool that will push him/her to advance or does he/she need a day care and preschool that will allow him/her to go at his/her own pace? For more information on day care and preschool look online. The right day care and preschool are out there. It just takes a little effort.
